FastCGI führt CGI-Skripte als Modul innerhalb des Apache-Web-Servers aus, statt diese bei jedem Aufruf neu zu berechnen. Dadurch kann es zu einer bis zu fünffachen Performance-Verbesserung kommen. Damit eine Anwendung als FastCGI ausgeführt werden kann, benötigt diese die Endung .fpl, .fcg oder .fcgi. Es muss sich hierbei um speziell als FastCGI programmierte Anwendungen handeln, ein "normales" cgi-Skript kann nicht als FastCGI ausgeführt werden.
