reading tag - attributes

Is it possible to read the DIV attribute height within the object-model when it is not fixed by css.
Would be nice to get information about the height of a text-container when the text and it's length differs.
So i could controll the layout of the site mich better while new content ist dynamically written.

IE:

document.getElementById("ID").offsetHeight
document.getElementById("ID").offsetWidth

NN:

document.ID.clip.height
document.ID.clip.width
